I haven't done a tutorial in a while. :) I was cutting bases for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde icons, and it struck me that one of them would work splendidly with some of my recent textures. In fact, a couple of the textures I use here are from sets I haven't released yet, so this tutorial offers an added sneak preview of coming attractions. *g*

Whilst making some John Barrymore icons, I hit upon an interesting sepia-ish colorizing effect for B&W images, and I thought I'd share. :) It's all done with color layers, so it's extremely easy.

I felt like writing a tutorial, so you get a tutorial. *g* Recently I've come across remarks by some very talented icon makers who say they hate working with black-and-white images, so I thought my experience with classic-film B&W might be useful to someone. If this gets a good reaction, I may write more along these lines from time to time.

I've been asked to share some tips on getting good color and image quality in icons made from screencaps (specifically [livejournal.com profile] nuranar's caps of "Hogan's Heroes", but it can apply to anything). Since I've been doing a lot of those icons and have it down to a system, I'll be happy to share it. For a lot of people this will be very basic, but I hope it will help the person who requested it. :)

Making classic movie icons often means working with scans of black-and-white photos that are sixty or seventy years old. Of course, the quality of these can be dodgy--especially if you're fond of obscure stars and character actors who don't have any nice galleries of hi-resolution photos devoted to them. One of the problems I've often come across is scans that are too high-contrast, making some parts of the image glaringly white. This tutorial offers a simple fix that will, if nothing else, make your image more consistent to work with.

Well, here goes my first attempt at a tutorial...

My ScratchGrunge Icon Textures were a great success a few days ago--thank you for the great response to them! A few people were interested in a tutorial on how they were made, so here you go. :)
