September Classic Icons
Part II of my September icon output, with forty-two icons.
Identification and comments:
01-03: Paul Newman. He was an accidental choice for star of the week at
classicicontest; I got him confused with Steve McQueen, who had been requested. Since I'd already gone to the trouble of digging up pictures of Newman, I decided to use him a couple of weeks later.
04-07: Steve McQueen. #5 won first place, but personally I like #4 much better.
08-09: For a behind-the-scenes challenge, here is makeup artist Perc Westmore working on Jimmy Cagney's donkey head for A Midsummer Night's Dream. Cagney can be seen observing him in the second of the pair.
10-11: Following up the previous two, a couple bonus icons of Cagney mugging as Bottom. Squee, indeed.
12-21: The allegedly legendary James Dean; his movies don't interest me, but his photos at least provided a lot of useful icon fodder. #12 won third place. I was actually trying to be metaphorical with #19 (James Dean and a tornado--two forces with brief but intense lives).
22-24: I made these icons to demonstrate the use of my Technogothic icon textures. They respectively feature Humphrey Bogart, Basil Rathbone (as Sherlock Holmes), and Boris Karloff (as the Frankenstein Monster).
25-26: For a "sidekicks" challenge, two icons featuring Allen Jenkins as Cagney's faithful stooge. I would have made one with Frank McHugh, but I thought Allen deserved some credit for a changeand it would have taken me an hour to dig out suitable screencaps.
27-34: Ginger Rogers. As with James Dean, I'm indifferent to her, but I like how a few of the icons turned out.
35-39: Lionel Barrymore. #35 won second place. I did the colorizing of #37.
40-42: Three icons for the theme of fall or falling, featuring Harold Lloyd, Bette Davis (in Of Human Bondage), and Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn (in Holiday). #41 and #42 respectively won first and third place.

13, 17 & 19 (especially) are incredibly well done. I'm rather indifferent about him as well, but he does command a certain emotion in all photographs, which is an asset for icon makers ^^
22, 23 (great great great) & 24 are all coming with me
& for the record, I laughed because you made Cagney *squee*.

I must admit that Clift is one actor I wouldn't make icons of. But you might like to look through the old entries at
