I felt like writing a tutorial, so you get a tutorial. *g* Recently I've come across remarks by some very talented icon makers who say they hate working with black-and-white images, so I thought my experience with classic-film B&W might be useful to someone. If this gets a good reaction, I may write more along these lines from time to time.

1. Crop/sharpen/etc. your base.

2. Create a new layer, filled with #F4DABE and set to Burn 100%.

3. Add this texture by [livejournal.com profile] lookslikerain, set to Soft Light 100%.

4. Create a new layer, filled with #AFA2A0 and set to Soft Light 100%.

5. Create a new layer, filled with #003540 and set to Exclusion 40%.

6. Merge the layers, and increase the color saturation to whatever level you find pleasing. (It's at about +50 on my example.)

7. Make a merged copy of the icon and paste it in as a new layer. Set it to Screen 30%, or whatever looks best for your image.

8. Merge the layers, and add any text/lights/decorations you want.
